چکیده
The burden of schistosomiasis (SCH) in children and infants Until recently, a paucity of information fueled the debate of whether national neglected tropical disease control programs should treat young children with praziquantel (PZQ). International dialogue was driven by uncertainty regarding the distribution and prevalence of SCH in children under 5, and whether targeting them with preventative chemotherapy should be considered by international policy. Compelling data suggest that SCH in young children causes severe morbidity and irreversible developmental damage. This prompted the World Health Organization (WHO) to call for improved diagnoses and treatment for this group. The recommendation triggered investigations on drug efficacy and safety, along with efforts aimed at promoting drug access and equitable delivery.

The East Africa Trachoma/NTD Cross-border Partnership
Eastern Africa, which comprises Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan, Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, has the highest burden of trachoma in the world. In sub-Saharan Africa, there are 1,274 districts known to be endemic for trachoma (i.e., the incidence of trachomatous inflammation – follicular (TF) is > 5%). Of these, 769 are found within the seven Eastern African countries, which represents over...
متن کاملDecline in the prevalence of neural tube defects following folic acid fortification and its cost-benefit in South Africa.
BACKGROUND In October 2003 South Africa embarked on a program of folic acid fortification of staple foods. We measured the change in prevalence of NTDs before and after fortification and assessed the cost benefit of this primary health care intervention. METHODS Since the beginning of 2002 an ecological study was conducted among 12 public hospitals in four provinces of South Africa. NTDs as w...
متن کاملHow to (or Not to) Integrate Vertical Programmes for the Control of Major Neglected Tropical Diseases in Sub-Saharan Africa
Combining the delivery of multiple health interventions has the potential to minimize costs and expand intervention coverage. Integration of mass drug administration is therefore being encouraged for delivery of preventive chemotherapy (PCT) to control onchocerciasis, lymphatic filariasis, schistosomiasis, soil-transmitted helminthiasis, and trachoma in sub-Saharan Africa, as there is considera...

Introduction Parasitic helminth infections, including lymphatic filariasis (LF), schistosomiasis and soiltransmitted helminthiasis (STH), are prevalent and often co-exist among poor populations in the developing world. Schistosomiasis and STH have particularly high prevalence among school-aged children, and LF is also more prevalent in this population than previously thought. Ivermectin (IVM) a...

Introduction & Objective: The use of modern microextraction techniques for determination and evaluation of pollutants is progressively increasing nowadays. Needle trap microextraction (NTME) technique has privileges compared to the other techniques for sampling occupa-tional and environmental pollutants from air. In this study the application of NTD technique packed with polydimethylsiloxane ...
